Mardi Gras Menu: Cooking for your Party
Re-creating the New Orleans aura for a Mardi Gras-themed party is a lot of pressure – everybody knows they go big or go home. For décor, you know to incorporate a lot of glitter and, of course, masks; and creating the playlist should be fun. But when it comes to the menu? The pressure is on! Toss up some jambalaya, for sure, but also include these treats for an authentic southern party if you’re looking to go all out.
You’ll probably think of Hurricanes or Southern Comfort when trying to think up a cocktail, but for something really authentic, make up some sazerac – the first drink of the Big Easy! Just make up some simple syrup by cooking a cup of water and a cup of sugar in a saucepan until the sugar dissolves (this makes one serving). Mix a quarter-cup of bourbon with a quarter teaspoon of bitters and the simple syrup in a shaker with ice. Coat the inside of a glass with anise and rub the rim with a lemon rind. Pour in the mixture and serve!
Red Beans and Rice
As soon as your guests get their Mardi Gras invitations, their stomachs will start growling for this dish. It’s so easy – it can be made in the slow cooker! All you have to do is put a pound of dried red beans in a crock pot with 7 cups of water, a green bell pepper, three celery stalks, three cloves of garlic, and an onion, all chopped. Add in a ½ pound of sliced Andouille sausage and some Creole seasoning to taste. Cook on high for seven hours, then serve over hot white rice garnished with green onions. Your guests will love it!
Banana Moon Pie Pudding
It’s sweet, Southern, and delicious. All you need is an 8oz package of cream cheese, a can of sweetened condensed milk, 2 cups of regular milk, a 5 oz box of vanilla pudding, 6 moon pies (cut up), 6 bananas, and a generous amount of cool whip. Make the pudding with the milk and combine it with the softened cream cheese. In a bowl, layer moon pies, pudding mixture, and bananas in even layers until you run out. Then layer the top with cool whip and chill in the fridge overnight. Garnish with leftover Moon Pie crumbs and get ready to have some happy guests.
